When should I plant my AUSTREE® Hybrids?
The best time to plant is after the last chance of a killing freeze, so planting dates vary with climate. Generally, the ends of March or the first of April are good times to plant. In the southern states and warmer areas, you can plant earlier. VERY IMPORTANT: The trees are available for Spring planting only.
How tall will they grow?
AUSTREE® Hybrids are very fast growing trees. On average, you can see 8 to 10 feet of growth the first year. Many people experience up to 15 feet of growth the first season. The AUSTREE® Hybrid will top out at 50 to 70 feet depending on soil, weather, and water conditions.
Do they lose their leaves?
Yes. The AUSTREE® Hybrid is a deciduous tree.
How deep do the roots go?
Root structure of the tree is generally 1/3 of the height of the tree in diameter and depth. It does not send out sucker roots.
How much water will they take?
Soil and climate conditions vary and the amount of water the trees need will vary also. You should give the trees plenty of water when you plant them. After that, we recommend that you soak the trees at least every third day, if possible. The best way to water the trees is on a slow drip system. Watering longer and less often is better for the growth of the tree. In most areas, once the trees' root system is established, supplemental watering isn't necessary. It is not a long term high maintenance tree.
Are the AUSTREE® Hybrids safe for livestock and pets?
YES! All of our trees are completely safe for all animals (and your children too!).
How long will they live?
AUSTREE® Hybrids have a life expectancy in excess of 50 years depending on the growing conditions and the planting site.
I have some yellowing leaves on my trees. What's wrong?
More than likely your trees need more water. It is also possible that there is a nutritional deficiency in your soil. If you soak your trees longer and the yellowing continues, you need to add a balanced fertilizer to the affected tree. Be certain not to put too much fertilizer on your trees. The old adage of "if a little is good, more is better" is not appropriate here!
I have insects on my trees. What should I do?
AUSTREE® Hybrids are not susceptible to most insects. However, you might see some isolated instances of the presence of insects. Your local nursery can recommend an effective insecticide that you can use.
Rabbits and deer sometimes bother my new tree, any suggestions?
A good way to keep rabbits, deer, mice, squirrels, dogs, and cats away from your trees is by spraying Plantskydd® on your trees. Plantskydd is an effective and affordable way to let your trees get established if you are having animal problems, but the best time to treat your trees is before the damage is done. The other option is to put chicken wire around the trees or use a tree guard that you can find at most hardware stores.
How close should I plant them?
We recommend that you plant the trees three feet apart in a single row for a solid windbreak or hedge. For double row planting, the trees should be planted five feet apart in a staggered formation.
